Aradhana Gala

Bare rock outcrop above the summit with the best view in Mihintale

A bare granite outcrop reached by a short, steep scramble from the Ambasthala terrace, with iron handrails set into the rock for the awkward last section. The summit is small and exposed — there is room for maybe twenty people — but the view across the plain to Anuradhapura is the best in the whole site.

Best done at dawn or in late afternoon; the rock gets blisteringly hot underfoot in the middle of the day.

A story
Tradition says this was the spot where the monk Mahinda first stood when he arrived from India in 247 BC, calling out to King Devanampiyatissa to stop his royal hunt. The name *Aradhana Gala* — "the rock of invitation" — refers to the king being invited to hear the Dhamma here.
