Eating Out

Nuwara Eliya's eating scene is less developed than the lowland resort towns. The central market area has plenty of Sri Lankan rice and curry places, cheap and filling. Several Indian restaurants cater to the Tamil tea-estate population and their dosas and hoppers are worth seeking out. The colonial hotels — the Hill Club and the Grand Hotel — serve full English-style meals in period dining rooms; the quality is variable but the experience is memorable.

For something in between, a number of cafés have opened near the town centre serving sandwiches, short eats, and the famous Nuwara Eliya strawberries, which grow well in the cool climate and are sold throughout the town in season (December to May).
