Kaohsiung Music Center

Whale-shaped music venue on the harbour, opened 2021

A cluster of striking concrete buildings on the eastern shore of the harbour, finished in 2021. The largest, called The Whale, is the main 12,000-seat outdoor concert venue and has become a Kaohsiung landmark in its own right. Other buildings house smaller halls, a music museum, recording studios and a public library.

The complex hosts Taiwan's biggest pop concerts and stages free events on the harbourside lawn most weekends. Worth a wander even when nothing is on for the architecture and the bay views from the upper decks. Reach it on the light rail from Pier-2 or Yancheng.
