Takao Railway Museum

Former Japanese-era freight terminus turned open-air railway museum

The old Kaohsiung Harbour Railway Station, once the largest freight depot in Taiwan, has been preserved as an open-air museum. The original 1908 wooden station building still stands; in the yards behind, dozens of historic locomotives and freight cars are parked on the tracks, free to climb on and explore.

Information boards (mostly in Chinese and Japanese, some English) explain the railway's role in the sugar, salt and banana trade that built Kaohsiung in the colonial era. Combine with a walk through the adjacent Pier-2 Art Center. Free entry. Take the light rail to Hamasen station.
