The Sadriddin Ayni Opera and Ballet Theatre is the main performing arts venue in Dushanbe, a Soviet-era building that has hosted productions since the 1940s. The company performs a mixed repertoire of European opera and ballet alongside Tajik classical works. Performance standards are not at Western European levels, but the experience is rewarding for the setting and the cultural immersion.
Tickets are very cheap by any standard. An evening at the Ayni Theatre — the ornate Soviet interior, the enthusiastic local audience, the surprisingly accomplished dancing — is one of the better ways to spend an evening in Dushanbe. Check the schedule at the box office, which is open from late morning; the season runs roughly October through May.
