Mayakovsky Russian Drama Theatre

The Mayakovsky Theatre, named after the Soviet poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, is the main Russian-language drama theatre in Dushanbe — a legacy of the large Russian-speaking community that lived in the city during the Soviet period. The company still performs a repertoire of Russian and world drama, primarily in Russian, to a diminishing but loyal audience.

The building is one of the more interesting pieces of Soviet-era architecture in Dushanbe, and the performances — whatever their language — capture something of the cultural complexity of this city that was built by Soviets, populated by Tajiks, and governed in both Russian and Tajik. Tickets are cheap. Check the programme at the box office.
