St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral

The Russian Orthodox cathedral on the edge of the Sinos neighborhood is a reminder of Dushanbe's Soviet and pre-Soviet Russian history. The congregation is small — the Russian and Slavic population of Dushanbe declined sharply after independence and the civil war — but the church remains active and the building is well-maintained.

The interior is typically Orthodox: gold iconostasis, incense, candlelight. Services are held on Sundays and major Orthodox feast days. The architecture is unpretentious 20th-century Russian Orthodox, but the experience of attending a service in Central Asia has a particular resonance. Visitors are welcome at services; dress modestly.
