The Pamir Museum is the town's main dose of regional context. Expect a small, old-fashioned collection rather than a polished institution: traditional dress, household objects, manuscripts, archaeological finds, and Soviet-era material from Gorno-Badakhshan.
It is worth visiting before heading deeper into the valleys. Even a quick walk through the displays helps make sense of why Pamiri identity, language, religion, and mountain geography sit a little apart from the rest of Tajikistan.
