Ao Khao Kwai (Buffalo Horn Bay)

Sheltered east-coast bay, calmer than the main beach and better for swimming year-round

Buffalo Horn Bay curves around the eastern side of the island and is generally calmer than Ao Yai. The more sheltered position makes it a better choice for swimming when the Andaman side is rough, and there are mangroves at the northern end worth exploring by kayak. A handful of simple bungalows sit above the beach, and there are a couple of small restaurants serving Thai food and fresh seafood.

The bay takes its name from the curving shape of its headlands. In clear water conditions, snorkelling is possible off the rocks at either end of the beach, where small reef fish shelter among the coral. Longtail boats for hire from the village can reach more remote coral patches and the neighbouring smaller islands.
