Erawan Shrine

Bangkok's most visited shrine — non-stop devotees, flower offerings, and traditional dance performances.

Address Ratchaprasong Intersection, Pathumwan, Bangkok

The Erawan Shrine (San Phra Phrom) occupies a corner of the Ratchaprasong intersection and is one of the most intensely active religious sites in Southeast Asia. A gold-leafed four-faced statue of Brahma sits in the outdoor shrine, surrounded at all hours by devotees making offerings of flowers, incense, wooden elephants, and freshly cooked food.

Traditional dance troupes perform continuously, hired by worshippers in thanks for prayers answered. The noise, colour, and density of devotion make it overwhelming and fascinating in equal measure. The shrine was heavily damaged by a bomb attack in August 2015 that killed 20 people; it was rebuilt and reopened within weeks, the offerings continuing. It stands as testimony to the deep animist-Hindu-Buddhist synthesis at the heart of popular Thai religious life.
