Wat Mahathat Worawihan is the most prominent temple in central Phetchaburi, its five-pranged prang visible from streets throughout the old town. The tower follows the Khmer architectural tradition brought north by the Khmers during their expansion into the upper peninsula, though the temple itself has been continuously expanded and restored over several centuries.
The main prang is flanked by smaller towers and an ordination hall with carved wooden doors. The cloister running around the inner courtyard shelters dozens of Buddha images. It is a working temple and busy in the mornings with monks and local worshippers.
Free entry; dress respectfully and remove shoes before entering the buildings.
