Chao Mae Lim Ko Niao Shrine

Chao Mae Lim Ko Niao Shrine, also known as Leng Chu Kiang Shrine, is the main Chinese religious landmark in Pattani. It sits in the old Chinese quarter and honours Lim Ko Niao, a local goddess whose legend links Chinese migration, Patani court history and the unfinished Krue Se Mosque.

The shrine is most vivid during the festival held after Chinese New Year, when images are carried through town and ritual endurance performances draw crowds. At quieter times it is still worth visiting for its incense-heavy interior and the reminder that Pattani's identity is not only Malay and Muslim.

A story
Lim Ko Niao is tied to one of Pattani's best-known legends: she is said to have cursed Krue Se Mosque after failing to persuade her brother to return to China. During the annual festival after Chinese New Year, her image is carried in procession and devotees perform fire-walking rituals.
