Wat Burapharam is the temple Surin people point to when they want to show the town's spiritual centre rather than another Khmer ruin in the countryside. It stands in the middle of Surin and is best known for Luang Pho Phra Chi, a revered Buddha image whose local following gives the compound more atmosphere than its modest scale might suggest.
Come early or late in the day, when the heat drops and the temple is folded back into ordinary town life. The visit is short, but useful: it gives Surin a living religious landmark to balance the archaeological sites and silk villages that dominate most itineraries around the province.
