When to Go

November through February is the best time to visit Pai. The valley is cool (sometimes cold at night — down to 5°C in January), the skies are clear, and the morning mist in the valley gives the landscape an atmospheric quality. These months are also the busiest, particularly the Christmas–New Year period and Thai holiday weekends, when the main street fills with domestic tourists and guesthouse prices spike.

March and April bring agricultural burning smoke from across northern Thailand and Myanmar, blanketing the valley in haze and significantly reducing visibility from the hilltop viewpoints. The hot season peaks in April with temperatures above 35°C in the valley.

The rainy season (May–October) turns the countryside dramatically green, fills the waterfalls, and keeps the bamboo bridge partially flooded. Rain tends to come in afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours, so mornings are often clear. Most of the key sights remain accessible, though some hill tracks become impassable.
