When to Go

Cappadocia's best months are April to June and September to October, when daytime temperatures are comfortable, the crowds are manageable, and the light is at its best for the landscape. July and August are hotter and busier, though afternoon thunderstorms occasionally cool things down. Winter brings snow, which transforms the fairy chimneys into something extraordinary — balloon flights still operate on clear days, and the tourist crush largely disappears.

Avanos specifically is pleasanter than the more touristic villages year-round because it functions as a real town with ordinary services. The pottery workshops operate regardless of season. Sarihan's dervish performances run every evening in summer and on weekends in winter.
