The first major church you reach at the foot of the main staircase. The interior is cruciform, with a central dome carved from the rock and walls covered in 9th- to 11th-century frescoes that show a Byzantine provincial style with Eastern, almost Coptic, touches.
The Annunciation, the Nativity, the Visitation, the Flight to Egypt, and the Three Magi all survive, along with the Daniel scene the church is named for. Some of the figures have had their eyes scratched out by iconoclasts or later visitors; what remains is still vivid.
