Güzelyurt

The market town fifteen minutes east of the Ihlara staircase makes a good base for visitors who want to spend more than a day in the area. The old Greek quarter survives almost intact, with stone houses, narrow lanes, and a converted 4th-century church of St Gregory of Nazianzus now serving as a mosque.

Several small pensions occupy old Greek mansions. The town also has a couple of underground cities, lava caves, and a monastery valley of its own — much quieter than the better-known Cappadocian sites further north.

A story
Until 1923 Güzelyurt — then Gelveri — had a large Greek Orthodox population. They were sent to Greece in the population exchange that followed the Greco-Turkish war, founding a new town called Nea Karvali near Kavala. The connection is still alive: groups from both towns visit each other every year.
