Sümbüllü Church (Hyacinth Church)

The two-storey facade of the Hyacinth Church is one of the most distinctive sights of the valley — carved directly into the cliff, with arches and niches that look like a small Romanesque chapel until you realise the whole thing is solid tufa.

Inside, the frescoes are 11th-century and include a striking Annunciation. The upper level was a refectory; the lower one served as the main church. The name refers to the hyacinth-like decoration painted around some of the apses.
