Karagedik Church

Karagedik is unusual in the valley because it is not carved into the cliff but built free-standing from blocks of cut stone — a small basilica of the late Byzantine period set back from the river near Belisirma. Most of the surrounding monastic compound has collapsed; the church survives.

Inside, the surviving fresco fragments include a Last Judgement on the west wall and several scenes from the life of Christ. The contrast with the cave churches a few hundred metres away makes it a useful stop for anyone interested in how Cappadocian architecture differed from the rest of Anatolia.
