The Church of St Nicholas in Demre town stands on the site of the original church where Bishop Nicholas was buried in the 4th century. The current building is largely Byzantine — modified by Venetian traders and later, less sympathetically, by Tsar Nicholas I of Russia in the 19th century. It is an active pilgrimage site as well as an archaeological monument. An ecumenical service is held here each year on 6 December. The interior contains significant Byzantine fresco fragments and mosaic floor sections.
