Meriç Bridge

The Meriç river forms part of the natural boundary between Turkey and Greece, and the historic bridge crossing it near Edirne has been a crossing point between continents for centuries. The current structure incorporates Ottoman stonework and has been reinforced and rebuilt over the years, but the bridge and its surroundings carry the weight of history — armies, merchants, diplomats, and refugees have all crossed here at one point or another. The river at this point is wide and slow-moving, lined with willows and poplars.

Walking out to the bridge provides a different perspective on Edirne — away from the mosques and bazaars, at the edge of the city where Turkey literally ends. On a clear day you can see across to the Greek bank. The area around the bridge and the nearby Sarayiçi island is pleasant for a walk, and combines naturally with a visit to the Kırkpınar stadium. The border geography here — Turkey meeting Greece and Bulgaria within a few kilometres — gives the place an unusual geopolitical texture that you can feel even on a short afternoon visit.
