Things to Do

Edirne's greatest draw is its extraordinary concentration of Ottoman architecture. As the empire's capital for nearly a century before the fall of Constantinople, the city accumulated mosques, caravanserais, bazaars, and complexes that rival anything in Istanbul. The Selimiye Mosque alone — Sinan's self-proclaimed masterpiece — justifies the journey, and it stands surrounded by companions nearly as impressive. Walking between the Old Mosque, the Üç Şerefeli, and the Beyazit II complex, you trace the entire arc of classical Ottoman architectural ambition in an afternoon.

Every June or July, Edirne hosts the Kırkpınar oil wrestling festival, a tradition stretching back to 1362 and widely considered the oldest continuously held sporting competition in the world. Wrestlers in leather breeches slather themselves in olive oil and compete in weight categories on the grass of Sarayiçi island on the Meriç river. The atmosphere — equal parts sporting event, folk festival, and pilgrimage — is unlike anything else in Turkey, and spectators come from across the country. If your visit falls in that window, plan around it.
