Palandöken is the mountain that turns Erzurum from a historic city into a winter base. The ski area starts only a few kilometres south of the centre and climbs high enough for reliable cold when western Turkey is mild.
Most visitors come in winter for lift-served skiing, but the mountain is visible year-round. In summer, dirt roads and trails lead up toward the summit area for big views over the Erzurum plain.
