Babadag Paragliding

Babadag, the cone-shaped mountain that dominates the view south from Hisaronu, is the launch site for what is widely regarded as one of the finest tandem paragliding flights anywhere in the Mediterranean. A new gondola, opened in 2021, lifts pilots and passengers from a base station above Oludeniz up to the summit ridge in under twenty minutes — eliminating what used to be a long, dusty van ride up unpaved switchbacks. From the top, three terraced launch pads at different altitudes let pilots pick the right wind window through the day.

Tandem flights with a licensed pilot launch in long bursts from late morning until early evening; touchdown is on the Oludeniz public beach with the lagoon shimmering immediately to the right. Bookings can be made at any of the paragliding offices that line the main street in Hisaronu and Oludeniz, with the price varying with the launch altitude. The summit itself is worth the gondola ride even if you don't fly: the views west towards Rhodes and east along the Lycian coast are some of the best in southern Turkey, and there are now a couple of restaurants and a glass-floored viewing platform up top.

A story
The launch pads at the top of Babadag sit at almost 1,970 metres — among the highest commercial paragliding takeoffs in the world — and the vertical drop down to the lagoon at sea level makes for a flight time of around forty minutes on a good day. The sport took off here in the early 1990s and Oludeniz has hosted the annual Air Games every October ever since.
