Kayaköy is the most affecting day trip from Hisaronu. The hillside above the Fethiye–Oludeniz road is covered in the stone shells of an entire Greek town that emptied out almost overnight a century ago — roofless houses, two big basilicas, chapels, schools, cisterns, all in soft creamy stone and overgrown with cypresses, figs, and pomegranates. There is a small admission gate and a marked path that loops up to the upper church and back down through the lower town. Reckon on two unhurried hours.
The site fed Louis de Bernières's novel Birds Without Wings, which is set here, and many visitors arrive having just finished it. Late afternoon, when the heat softens and the light goes gold on the stones, is the best time to come; the village restaurants at the bottom of the path — Levissi Bahçe and a few others — do good slow food cooked in the wood-fired ovens of restored Greek houses. Kayaköy can be reached by dolmus from Hisaronu via Oludeniz, or by walking the marked footpath that climbs over the saddle from Oludeniz beach (about two hours, hot in summer, splendid views).
