Gordion was the capital of ancient Phrygia and the place most travellers come to Polatlı to see. The site is tied to King Midas, the Gordian knot, and Alexander the Great's impatient solution to it, but the archaeology is more than the legend.
Visit the museum in Yassıhüyük, then cross to the Great Tumulus, long associated with Midas and now usually understood as the tomb of his father Gordias. The citadel mound lies a little farther away. Together they give a good sense of a city that sat on the routes between Anatolia's older kingdoms, Persia, and the later Roman world.
