The Mehmetçik Monument rises on Kartaltepe, west of Polatlı, where the Greek advance was halted in 1921. The 22-metre soldier gives the battlefield its most direct visual symbol: one hand raised in command, the other holding a rifle.
There is a museum and visitor centre on site. It is not subtle, but it is effective, and the view helps you read the open country as a military landscape rather than just another stretch of steppe beside the highway.
