The Sakarya Victory Monument stands on a wooded hill just north of the town centre. It commemorates the 1921 battle that stopped the Greek advance toward Ankara and helped decide the Turkish War of Independence.
The stairway climbs between 21 pairs of slabs, one for each day and night of the battle, before reaching the main sculptural group at the top. The small museum and military cemetery give the monument useful context, especially if you are following the wider battlefield route.
