Kuştul Monastery

Ruined cliffside Greek Orthodox monastery in the mountains south of Trabzon.

Kuştul Monastery is one of the old Greek Orthodox monastic sites tucked into the forested mountains behind Trabzon. Its surviving walls stand high above the Maçka valley, less polished than Sumela but useful for understanding how many Christian communities once occupied the Pontic hinterland.

The appeal is partly the setting: steep slopes, stonework half absorbed by greenery, and a quieter atmosphere than the region's headline monastery. Go with realistic expectations, as access and conservation conditions can vary, and treat it as a historical stop rather than a fully interpreted museum.
