Vazelon Monastery

Ruined Greek Orthodox monastery in the Maçka forests, older and rougher than nearby Sumela.

Vazelon Monastery is a ruined Greek Orthodox monastery hidden in the forests of Maçka, south of Trabzon. It lacks the dramatic cliff-face fame of Sumela, but its age, isolation, and battered stone rooms make it one of the more atmospheric religious sites in the Pontic mountains.

The visit is rougher than Sumela and conditions can change with restoration plans, access roads, and local maintenance. Go for the sense of abandonment and layered history, not for polished interpretation. The surrounding forest is part of the mood: green, damp, and quiet enough to make the ruined walls feel far from modern Trabzon.
