Tunceli Museum is the best first stop in town because it gives context to a region that outsiders often know only through politics or mountains. Exhibits cover archaeology, ethnography, local belief, and the layered identities of Dersim and Tunceli.
It is a modern, manageable museum rather than a huge institution. Allow an hour before heading into the valley; the landscape makes more sense when you have some of the cultural background in mind.
