Hosap Castle (Hoşap Kalesi) is one of the most dramatic ruins in eastern Turkey. About 60 km southeast of Van on the old caravan road to Iran, it sits on a sharp rock spur above the village of Güzelsu and the Hoşap River. The castle is largely intact: gatehouses, towers, ramparts, a small palace, and even a hammam survive in recognisable form.
This is Kurdish work, not Ottoman or Urartian. The local Mahmudi dynasty held the surrounding valleys from the sixteenth into the eighteenth century, and Hosap was their stronghold. It is rarely crowded — even at midday in summer you might have it to yourself. Combine it with Cavustepe for a half-day loop east from Van.
