Chardzhou — officially renamed Türkmenabat since 1999 — is primarily a transit point on the Trans-Caspian Railway and the main crossing point into Uzbekistan. Most travelers spend no more than a night here. The city has a few genuinely interesting things: the bazaar, the Amu Darya riverbank, and the experience of being at this particular edge of Turkmenistan.
