Karakum Oasis

The Erbent oasis occupies a slight depression in the Karakum where groundwater lies close enough to the surface to support a cluster of trees, gardens, and the low mud-brick architecture typical of desert Turkmenistan. Around the edges of the settlement, the sand asserts itself immediately: dunes press against garden walls, and in a strong wind the distinction between village and desert becomes genuinely unclear.

The oasis is best explored early in the morning, before the heat peaks. A short walk from the village centre brings you to the outer gardens, where residents grow melons, tomatoes, and apricots in the improbable abundance that oasis agriculture can produce. The contrast with the surrounding landscape — beige sand extending to a flat horizon in every direction — is striking enough that even a brief visit tends to leave a lasting impression.

A story
The Karakum desert covers around 70 percent of Turkmenistan's total land area, making it one of the largest sand deserts in the world. Erbent sits roughly at its centre, sustained by underground water channels — karez — dug and maintained by desert communities for centuries. Without this ancient irrigation system, the settlement could not exist: the nearest comparable oasis is more than 80 km away across open dunes.
