From Hanoi (most common): Ha Long Bay is 170 km east of Hanoi — a journey of 3–4 hours by road via the expressway. Most cruise packages include transport from Hanoi to the harbour. Independent travellers can take a direct tourist bus from Hanoi's Old Quarter (booked through guesthouses and travel agents) directly to Ha Long City pier or Tuan Chau Island pier, where most boats depart. Buses run multiple times daily and cost around $5–10.
Private car or minivan: Faster and more comfortable than the bus, especially for groups. Travel agencies in Hanoi can arrange a private transfer for around $40–80 per car, depending on the vehicle and operator.
From Haiphong: The city of Haiphong, 60 km from Ha Long City, is connected by a modern expressway and fast ferry to Cat Ba Island. If you are arriving by air at Cat Bi Airport in Haiphong, this is a useful alternative route that avoids Hanoi entirely.
By air: Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi is the standard arrival point for international visitors. Van Don International Airport, 60 km from Ha Long City, opened in 2018 and receives some domestic flights from Ho Chi Minh City and Danang.
