Hospital Cave

A surreal Vietnam War relic concealed in the limestone hills of Cat Ba Island, about 10 km from Cat Ba town. From outside, only a small set of stone steps leading into the cliff face gives any indication of what lies beneath. Inside, three floors of concrete-lined rooms have been preserved largely intact — wards, operating theatres, a kitchen, a small cinema where Vietnamese soldiers watched films during their recovery, and even a small swimming pool used as a water reservoir.

Guided tours run continuously through the day. The cave is reached by motorbike or rented bicycle from Cat Ba town along the main road across the island. Allow an hour. A torch helps in the dimmer sections, though most of the cave is now lit. The site is included on most organised Cat Ba day tours but is worth the half-day independent visit if you have the time.

A story
Between 1963 and 1975, this seventeen-room hospital was hidden inside a limestone mountain on Cat Ba Island, sheltering Viet Cong fighters and Vietnamese officials from American bombing raids. Three storeys deep, with operating rooms, a cinema, a swimming pool, and ventilation shafts disguised as natural cave openings, it housed up to 200 patients at a time. Construction took three years; the cave was sealed and forgotten after the war, then reopened to visitors in the 1990s. The original concrete walls, ironwork, and even the rusted operating table remain in place.
