Kitesurfing

Mui Ne is the best kitesurfing and windsurfing destination in Southeast Asia, and one of the most reliable wind sites in the world. The northeast trade wind blows strongly from November to April, typically reaching 20-30 knots and sometimes gusting higher. The beach faces the right direction to make the most of it, and the water is shallow for a long way out — ideal for learners who fall frequently.

A dozen or more schools operate along the main strip on Nguyen Dinh Chieu road. Lessons are significantly cheaper than in Europe — a beginner course runs over three to four days and the instruction is generally good. In the shoulder months (May and October), a lighter southwest breeze makes conditions more suitable for beginners. Outside the kite season, the beach is calm and the fishing boats go out at night, forming a display of lights visible from the shore. Surfboard and SUP rentals are available year-round.

A story
Mui Ne's status as a kitesurfing destination dates from the early 2000s, when a handful of pioneers discovered that the bay's consistent northeast wind, shallow water, and absence of rocks made it close to ideal for learning. The first schools appeared around 2002, and the destination quickly established a reputation in the international kite community. Today, during peak season, the bay is a forest of kites from mid-morning to late afternoon.
