Groups E and F are among the earlier structures at My Son, dating from the 8th century onwards. They represent a different phase of Cham architectural development from the later Groups B and C, with a more experimental quality to the stonework and ornamentation. Several structures in these groups show the influence of Hoa Lai architectural style, which was evolving in parallel at the same period.
Group E contains one of the site's better-preserved kalan (sanctuary towers), and the approach path from the main visitor area passes through secondary jungle that gives a good sense of how the entire site must have looked before clearance — dense vegetation, fallen masonry, and the silhouettes of towers emerging from the tree line. The carved decorative elements on the exterior walls include some of the finest surviving examples of early Cham sculptural work still in situ.
