Trang An

UNESCO-listed boat circuit through karst caves and flooded valleys, the best experience in Ninh Binh

Trang An is the standout experience in Ninh Binh and one of the best things to do in northern Vietnam. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2014, the complex covers 6,000 hectares of limestone karst peaks, river valleys, wetlands, and forest. The boat circuit — rowed by local guides, usually one person using their feet on the oars — winds through 47 caves and grottos, across several open valleys, and past Buddhist temples clinging to cliff faces.

The circuit takes two to three hours depending on which route you choose, and the experience is genuinely different from Tam Coc: less crowded, wilder in feel, and covering more ground. The longer circuits take you deeper into the complex. Boats hold four people; guides are assigned at the dock.

Go early morning if possible — before 8am the light is better and the boatmen are fresher. Avoid the weekend afternoons in peak season when the floating market of tour boats can become a traffic jam.

A story
The Trang An landscape was used by UNESCO as a rare example of a "mixed" World Heritage site — simultaneously a natural landscape of outstanding geological value and a cultural landscape with evidence of continuous human habitation stretching back 30,000 years. Excavations of caves in the complex have found stone tools, animal bones, and human remains from the prehistoric period, making the boat trip through the caves a journey through both geological and human time.
