The Diksam Plateau is the best place in the world to see dragon blood trees (Dracaena cinnabari), a species found nowhere else on Earth. The flat-topped limestone plateau in the island's interior holds the largest concentration of these remarkable trees, their mushroom-shaped canopies catching the mist that drifts in from the Indian Ocean. The Firmihin forest, within the plateau, is the densest stand.
The plateau sits at around 900 metres elevation and is reached by rough 4x4 track from Hadibo. The landscape has a genuinely alien quality: the grey limestone, the sparse vegetation, the peculiar geometry of the dragon blood trees, and the occasional bottle-shaped desert rose (Adenium obesum socotranum) combine into something that looks like a science fiction film set rather than a real place. The UNESCO World Heritage listing specifically protects this landscape.
