Qalansiya Beach

Qalansiya Beach on the western end of Socotra is widely considered the most beautiful beach on the island: a long arc of white sand backed by turquoise lagoon water and sand dunes, with the rocky hills of the western coast providing a dramatic backdrop. The adjacent Detwah Lagoon is calm and shallow, ideal for swimming and snorkelling, and the colours of the water — shifting from turquoise to deep blue to green — are as vivid as anywhere in the Indian Ocean.

The beach is remote even by Socotra standards and takes several hours to reach from Hadibo on the island's rough roads. Most visitors stay at least one night, camping on the beach or using basic accommodation in Qalansiya town. There is no commercial development here and the setting is genuinely undisturbed.

A story
Detwah Lagoon, which adjoins Qalansiya Beach, is designated a Ramsar wetland — internationally recognised for its importance as a habitat for migratory birds and marine life. The turquoise waters are calm because the lagoon is separated from the open ocean by a sand bar. Local fishermen have worked these waters for generations and the small town of Qalansiya, with its whitewashed buildings, is one of the more picturesque settlements on the island.
