Important — Security: Yemen has been in a state of severe conflict since 2015. The northern highlands, including the Thola area, have been under Houthi control for most of the war. Most governments advise against all travel to Yemen. Before making any plans, check your government's current travel advisory and read recent reporting from credible sources. The situation on the ground changes and what was accessible one year may not be the next.
From Sana'a
When travel was possible, Thola was a straightforward half-day excursion from the capital. The town lies roughly 54 km northwest of Sana'a by road, following the route that climbs through the highland villages of the western plateau. The drive took around an hour to an hour and a half depending on road conditions. Shared taxis and minibuses running north from the main Sana'a transport hubs passed through or near Thola; alternatively, hiring a private car and driver for the day was the most practical approach for visitors who wanted flexibility.
There is no accommodation in Thola itself. All travellers used Sana'a as a base, returning to the capital the same day.
