Olosega Village

A short walk across the Asaga Strait Bridge brings you to Olosega, the twin island that forms the other half of this volcanic doublet. The village here is small, quiet, and sees very few visitors. Walking through it gives you a clearer sense of daily life in the Manu'a Islands than anywhere you're likely to encounter on the more visited island of Tutuila: a fa'alupega (village ceremonial structure), houses set back from the road, and the unhurried pace of a community that has been largely left alone by tourism.

The road continues around the southern side of Olosega with views back toward Ofu and the reef, before the terrain rises sharply into the island's volcanic interior. You can't drive or walk all the way around — the road ends — but the walk from the bridge through the village and along the southern shore takes an hour or so at an easy pace. Bring water, say hello to anyone you pass, and keep in mind that Olosega, like Ofu, takes the Sabbath seriously: Sunday is not the day for this walk.

A story
Olosega has a higher elevation and steeper terrain than Ofu, and its cliff-edged coastline on the eastern side drops almost directly into deep water — a dramatic contrast to the wide reef lagoon on Ofu's southern coast just a few minutes' walk away.
