The Blunts Point Battery sits on a headland above Pago Pago Harbor, where the US military installed coastal defence guns after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941. The guns remain in place — large naval cannons pointing seaward, now surrounded by vegetation and slowly being reclaimed by the tropical climate.
The site gives excellent views over the harbour and the surrounding mountains. Tutuila served as a significant staging base during the Pacific war, and the battery was part of a network of defences around the harbour. The island itself was shelled by a Japanese submarine in January 1942 — the only enemy attack it experienced. The battery can be reached on foot from the harbour area, though the path is steep.
