Booloominbah is a magnificent late-Victorian mansion on the University of New England campus, about 5 km north of the city centre. The house was built in 1888 for a wealthy pastoralist family and is now heritage-listed, serving as the administrative heart of the university. The building is an exuberant exercise in late-Victorian sandstone architecture — turrets, verandas, intricate timber fretwork — set in grounds that include a formal garden and mature trees.
The UNE campus is open to visitors; you can walk up to the house and wander the grounds freely. The university also has its own gallery and museum on campus. If you are combining a visit to Booloominbah with the New England Regional Art Museum, allow a half-day.
