Cathedral of Saints Mary and Joseph

The Catholic cathedral a few blocks from St Peter's is a substantial bluestone and sandstone building that has been growing since the 1860s. Its tower is a landmark visible from much of central Armidale. The interior holds some good stained glass and a sense of accumulated history — the building was added to in stages over more than a century, and you can see the different periods if you look carefully.

Together with St Peter's and a handful of other historic churches, the cathedral anchors the compact walkable core of central Armidale. The concentration of ecclesiastical architecture here is genuinely unusual for a city this size, and the sandstone gives the whole precinct a coherent, if somewhat sombre, character.
