Dorrigo National Park

Dorrigo National Park sits on the plateau above Bellingen at around 800 metres elevation, part of the World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests. The park protects a swathe of subtropical and warm temperate rainforest that is spectacular in any weather — the mist that rolls up the escarpment from the coast gives the forest an otherworldly quality.

The Skywalk at the Rainforest Centre is the main entry point: a canopy walkway extending out over the escarpment with sweeping views down the Bellinger Valley. The Crystal Shower Falls track (one hour return) winds through dense fern gullies to a waterfall where you can walk behind the curtain of water. The Wonga Walk (7 km loop) passes through the best old-growth sections of the park. The Rainforest Centre at the park entrance has good interpretive displays and a café. Bellingen is 25 km down the mountain; the drive up the escarpment is itself scenic.

A story
The Dorrigo rainforest is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering several disconnected patches of subtropical and warm temperate rainforest along the east Australian escarpment. These forests are direct descendants of the vegetation that covered the supercontinent Gondwana before it broke apart 180 million years ago — making a walk through the canopy a journey into deep geological time.
