Bellingen

Bellinger Valley town with rainforest scenery and an arts-and-alternative-lifestyle streak near Dorrigo.

Bellingen is a small town in the Bellinger Valley on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, set among subtropical rainforest and banana plantations. It has developed a strong arts and alternative lifestyle culture over the past few decades and is now one of the most appealing small towns on this stretch of the coast. The main street has good bookshops, organic food stores, galleries, and cafes. The Bellingen Jazz and Blues Festival and the Global Carnival are annual events that draw visitors from across the region.

The valley itself is beautiful — the Bellinger River runs through lush green hills, and Dorrigo National Park with its World Heritage rainforest is just up the escarpment. Bellingen is an excellent base for exploring this stretch of country between the coast and the Great Dividing Range.

Eating Out

Bellingen has an unusually strong food culture for a small town. The café scene reflects the alternative lifestyle community — expect good coffee, whole food options, and locally sourced produce. Several restaurants open for dinner on weekends, though options are more limited midweek.

Getting There

Bellingen is on the Waterfall Way (B78), 520 km north of Sydney and about 115 km south of Coffs Harbour. The nearest major centres are Coffs Harbour (30 km to the northeast, about 35 minutes) and Grafton. A car is the most convenient option; the Waterfall Way connecting Bellingen to the New England plateau is a scenic route in itself.

By public transport, Busways operates a service from Coffs Harbour. The nearest train station with frequent services is Coffs Harbour on the North Coast line. Dorrigo, up the escarpment, is reached by the same road (B78) continuing inland; there are no regular buses between Bellingen and Dorrigo.

When to Go

Bellingen is pleasant year-round but the best months are April to September. The valley gets hot and humid in summer (December–February) and the sub-tropical climate means occasional heavy rain and the risk of flooding — the river has broken its banks several times. Winter is mild and sunny, the valley mist is atmospheric in the mornings, and the hills above retain some colour.

August is the time to visit for the Bellingen Jazz and Blues Festival. October brings the Global Carnival, a world music event. The third Saturday markets happen year-round and are worth timing a visit around.
