Broken Hill's Miner's Memorial stands on the Line of Lode, above the town that grew from one of the world's great silver-lead-zinc deposits. Its long list of names is the point: the memorial records the miners who died in accidents and industrial disease across more than a century of work underground.
The building is stark and exposed, which suits the subject. From the top you get a clear view across Broken Hill's grid, slag heaps, desert light, and the mining scar that made the city possible. Visit near sunset if you can; the memorial is sombre, but the outlook is magnificent.
