Palace Hotel

The Palace Hotel is a tall verandahed pub on Argent Street, in the heart of Broken Hill's heritage quarter. From the outside it looks like a fine but unremarkable Federation-era hotel; inside, the walls are covered in a riot of murals that are unlike anything else in Australia — copies of European masters, outback landscapes, religious scenes, all painted directly onto the plaster over decades.

The bar is open to the public and the food is decent pub fare. If you can, walk through the dining rooms and up the stairs to see the full extent of the painting. The rooms above are old-school country pub accommodation.

A story
Mario's Palace Hotel appears in the 1994 film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert as the drag queens' overnight stop, complete with the famous mural of Botticelli's Venus on the wall. The murals were the work of Indigenous artist Gordon Waye and Mario Celotto in the 1960s and 70s, and they still cover almost every interior wall — staircase, ceiling, dining room. The hotel is real, the murals are real, the upstairs rooms are still rented out.
